Summary

I'm giving this book four stars because I found it interesting in its historical context; if I picked it up without knowing that Lem wrote it in 1961 in communist Poland, I probably wouldn't have gotten halfway through without putting it down and I would have rated it much lower。 As a period piece, this is fascinating; it's a window into how a science fiction writer in the Soviet Union talked about the future of interstellar travel at the beginning of the Space Race。 Lem also wrestles with the t I'm giving this book four stars because I found it interesting in its historical context; if I picked it up without knowing that Lem wrote it in 1961 in communist Poland, I probably wouldn't have gotten halfway through without putting it down and I would have rated it much lower。 As a period piece, this is fascinating; it's a window into how a science fiction writer in the Soviet Union talked about the future of interstellar travel at the beginning of the Space Race。 Lem also wrestles with the theme of suffering and the question of whether suffering is what drives us to achieve great things - he poses a very similar question about the virtue of a utopian project as a book like Brave New World, but he engages more deeply with the nuance of the question than Huxley did and as a reader I came away with a lot of questions to think about。With all that said, and without spoiling too much I hope, as a contemporary reader I can't really love this book because of its approach to sex, which is a very mid-century take on things。 The very worst impulses of the James Bond type of man-forces-himself-on-woman-then-woman-falls-for-man trope from that era are on full display here。 To a certain extent, I see Lem trying to use this dynamic to unsettle the reader and make a point about the brokenness of the main character, but the point is lost along the way and ultimately ends up coming off (at least to me) as being in favor of men forcing themselves on women。 This wasn't the main theme of the book or anything, and I still enjoyed reading the story, but this definitely detracted from my enjoyment。 。。。more

This, to me, was a difficult read。 More literature than sci-fi, but with beautifully written hard science-fiction parts。 I almost would have liked to hear more about these space exploration adventures that lie in the past of the protagonist。 As it stands they are used as sometimes vivid, sometimes hazy, regretted and celebrated memories that stand in contrast with a present that seems to have nothing to offer to the protagonist。It’s actually masterfully written, just kinda difficult to read。 The This, to me, was a difficult read。 More literature than sci-fi, but with beautifully written hard science-fiction parts。 I almost would have liked to hear more about these space exploration adventures that lie in the past of the protagonist。 As it stands they are used as sometimes vivid, sometimes hazy, regretted and celebrated memories that stand in contrast with a present that seems to have nothing to offer to the protagonist。It’s actually masterfully written, just kinda difficult to read。 The story is much deeper than what is said。 But it also runs into issues with progress in political and sociological realms that has happened in the last 60 years。I’m not super familiar with the rest of Lem’s canon, but of what I do know, I could see significant traces。 There are robots similar to how they are treated in the Cyberiad, the prosaic description of the future has lots of parallels in his non-fiction work Summa Technologiae, and the narrative style is very similar to Solaris。All of this is making me into a huge Stanisław Lem fan! But this is perhaps not the most obvious entry point to his work。 。。。more

Mostly, a very good story。 Felt it trailed off and meandered a bit towards a slightly sentimental conclusion。 Otherwise, could have been a five star read for me。

only because he likes them。 The romance could have ended just like in the novel but under one condition - the heroine should have been a more expressive character。 I still consider the idea of "betrization" to be an interesting concept, however I slightly oversimplified its realization。 My ambiguous feelings toward this book can be seen in the fact that I gave permission for translation and foreign editions。 It is impressive how many things Lem predicted in terms of technology, for example reading books on tablets。 There are wonderful poetic descriptions of space travel in this novel, but space exploration as such is not idolized。 The author makes it known that space travel as such is dangerous。 It goes into detail describing some of the past Hal's 'space travel' experiences, one of them being paranormal (this made me think of Solaris)。 There is also an obvious philosophical aspect to the novel。 Lem (through the eyes of Hal) questions this future society。 Hal cannot feel at home at this new Earth, but he is not completely closed minded about it。 His love for Eri makes Hal want to understand this (to him alien) Earth。 Indeed, there is a romantic story within this novel as well。 I don't remember seeing a female character playing as important role in Lem's novels before。 Eri definitely plays an important part in this novel (and in Hal's life) so that was interesting。 Lem said that the female character could have been better developed, but to me she seemed real enough。 All in all, this was a rich story and I enjoyed it a lot。 Highly recommended to lovers of science fiction and dystopian literature。 。。。more

Well written beautiful book that makes violence and rape sound just wonderful! The author has talent so for that he gets two stars, and I suspect others of his books are very much worth reading。But。。。not。。。this。。。one! The only Hal worthy of being in space was an oddity in an odyssey that was worth paying attention to。Very politely, but firmly, not recommended Dave。

I liked and was very much impressed by this disquieting novel, the story of an astronaut’s re-acclimation to Earth after a 10-year mission at the ends of the galaxy。 What makes this re-acclimation most difficult is that speed-of-light travel has brought Hal Bregg and his fellow astronauts back to an Earth that has undergone 127 years of development。While there are technological and architectural developments that impress and disorient, it’s a more subtle alteration that makes re-integration a co I liked and was very much impressed by this disquieting novel, the story of an astronaut’s re-acclimation to Earth after a 10-year mission at the ends of the galaxy。 What makes this re-acclimation most difficult is that speed-of-light travel has brought Hal Bregg and his fellow astronauts back to an Earth that has undergone 127 years of development。While there are technological and architectural developments that impress and disorient, it’s a more subtle alteration that makes re-integration a concern for Bregg, his colleagues, and his superiors: “betrization”, the inoculation of all the world’s people against violent thought and action。 While Bregg tries to sort his feelings about the new presiding spirit of humankind, Lem offers up a clever and keenly observed social transformation。 By the eradication of violent impulses, it becomes possible to work more cooperatively, to make a virtual paradise of the planet, to allocate all work to robots, to dedicate one’s life to personal satisfactions。 At the same time humanity forges this new world of beneficent peace, there has been a thorough curtailment of any activity that entails risk or adventure。Lem hints at the meaningless of human drama, art, exploration, etc。 when there is no aggression and no will to risk life and limb, and it’s long after this novel is finished that I continue to ponder just how mixed a blessing it is to wish away mankind’s savage impulses。 Bregg’s reaction to the effete behavior of people is analogous, probably, to how most of us would feel。 He is perturbed that his mission and even the data collected prove meaningless to a people unwilling to leave the Earth; he is ambivalent about what it means to continue to live with others who have no strong passions。Several scenes in this book are memorable, but two stand out。 The initial descriptions of Bregg’s arrival on Earth and his confused movements around the airport on the bewildering multi-level automated concourses。 This nightmarish immersion into a glimmering, confused chaos is well done, a dispassionate longueur worthy of the nouveau roman of Alan Robbe-Grillet。 And the other scene is Bregg’s suicidal flight from the resort in his car, which turns into an undefinable cat and mouse with a hover vehicle that pursues him。 The ambivalent menace in this scene was subtly rendered and the scene’s conclusion is satisfyingly cathartic。 。。。more
